"What are the Complications of Bird Flu"

It seems unfair, but you can get sick from the bird flu H5N1 virus, defeat the virus but still die.

A lot of the danger of avian influenza comes not from the infection itself (although this is not without a lot of danger), but from the complications that it can cause or allow.

These include:

Pneumonia -- the bacteria and viruses that cause pneumonia are usually kept out of your lungs by your immune system. However, when you're fighting H5N1, your immune system is so weak, especially your respiratory system, that you're especially open to this kind of attack.

Encephalitis -- the swelling of your brain. Can follow as a result of many different viral infections, either directly or as an auto-immune response to a viral infection in another part of your body.

Multi-organ failure -- your body needs oxygen. When your blood cannot obtain the oxygen your body needs, because of an infection in your lungs, the rest of your body stops functioning also.

High fever -- Fever is a natural and beneficial response to an infection, because it helps to kill and control harmful bacterial and viruses, and to benefit your body's immune response. However, sometimes your body tries to raise its own temperature so high that you die just from your own fever.

Diarrhea -- This alone kills many infants and toddlers in the developing world. If diarrhea is out of control, they become so dehydrated that their little bodies cannot continue to function. Bird flu also causes diarrhea and it contributes to weakening your body when you most need strength.
