Bird flu is the name we are stuck with, and I use it a lot myself, to mean a particular kind of avian influenza virus, more scientifically called A/H5N1 or just plain H5N1. It is a form of bird flu, since it primarily infects birds, although it has infected people, cats, civets and perhaps other mammals. So far, fortunately, it is not successfully developed the ability to pass easily from mammal to mammal or human to human. It's contagious, no doubt about that, but so far, high pathogenic avian influenza is not easily contagious in the same way that we all know about ordinary human, seasonal flu. The fear is that HPAI H5N1 will develop the ability to spread between people as easily as ordinary seasonal flu, while retaining its powerful mortality rate. Just think what would happen if 55% of everybody you know who gets a case of the winter flu, dies from it. That's the potential disease that H5N1 poses to it. That's why responsible medical authorities worry about the spread of bird flu and have extensive plans in place to detect and control any sign of human to human aerosol (by air -- through coughing and sneezing) contagion. What are the symptoms of bird flu How do you prepare for a bird flu pandemic How do you protect yourself from bird flu Why we cannot depend on a bird flu vaccine
