The official name of the bird flu virus is A/H5N1. That means that it is a type A influenza virus. From everything we have seen and learned about it, it's a tough, mean virus. Everything in that official name does have a scientific meaning that differentiates what the media has termed "bird flu" and all other forms of influenza, including all other strains of avian influenza (because A/H5N1 is far from the only one) and human or seasonal influenza.
